HOW TO MANAGE PAIN AND DISCOMFORT FROM A ROTATOR CUFF TEAR

A rotator cuff tear can cause significant pain and discomfort, and can greatly impact your quality of life. While it is important to seek medical attention from a qualified orthopedic specialist, there are also steps you can take to manage the pain and discomfort on your own.

Rest: The first step in managing pain and discomfort from a rotator cuff tear is to rest the affected shoulder. Avoid any activities that cause pain, and take a break from any activities that may have caused the tear in the first place.

Ice and Heat Therapy: Apply ice to the affected area for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day. This can help reduce swelling and pain. After a few days, switch to using a heating pad or hot compress to help soothe the area and promote healing.

Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relief medications such as acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuorofen or naproxen, can help manage pain and inflammation associated with a rotator cuff tear.

Physical Therapy: Working with a physical therapist can help strengthen the muscles in the shoulder and improve range of motion. Dr. Thon can provide you with a referral to a physical therapist that specializes in shoulder injuries. Physical therapy is helpful in both non-surgical and surgical treatment to keep your shoulder as strong and healthy as possible to prevent further injury.

Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be necessary to repair a rotator cuff tear. Dr. Thon can discuss surgical options with you and help determine if surgery is the best course of action for your individual situation.

It is important to note that everyone’s situation is unique and that it is essential to consult with a qualified orthopedic specialist to develop a personalized treatment plan. If you are experiencing symptoms of a rotator cuff tear or other sports-related injury, don't hesitate to contact Dr. Thon's office at 303-344-9090 to schedule a consultation.
